Cala Agulla/Cala Ratjada

Cala Agulla is the name of a bay with a sandy beach as well as that of an adjacent part of Cala Ratjada in the north east Mallorca. The bay of Cala Agulla is only built on the south-east side, a settlement (urbanization) mostly of hotels and shops, which bears the name of the bay, and has meanwhile grown together with the main town of Cala Ratjada. The fine sandy beach on the west side is completely framed by a pine forest that has spread over a dune area. The area was protected as a “natural area of particular value” (Àrea natural d’especial interes, ANAI) by the Natural Area Act of 30 January 1991.

On the beach of Cala Agulla there is a restaurant and three small beach bar containers. As in most tourist centers of the island, sunbeds and sunshades are lent during the season. It is also possible to rent pedal boats and participate in banana trips. The sandy beach falls flat into the sea with wide sandbanks in some places. Access is via paths from the village of Cala Agulla through the forest, the road Carrer de l’Agulla, which leads from the port directly to the bay, or via a bypass road from Capdepera. To the north-west of the beach, a footpath leads to Cala Mesquida via Cala Moltó.

Cala Ratjada is a locality of Capdepera. It is located at the northeastern end of the island, about 80  kilometers away from Palma. It is the main coastal port and most developed in the district of Capdepera.

Cala Ratjada is a very established complex and is included among the main tourist destinations of the island.

Tourism began to land on these lands in the 60s, before this Cala Ratada was a small fishing port. The original port still lingers today, but it has become more of a tourist cruise destination than the fishing port it once was.

Cala Ratjada is the closest point between Mallorca and Menorca, which is why Cala Ratjada has played an important role in the island’s economy over the years. On clear days, from here it is not difficult to see the island of Menorca and the city of Ciudadella.

This area of Mallorca is famous for the steepness of its coastline, as well as for the large number of coves we find: Capdepera has 40 kilometers of spectacular coastline with beaches that mostly have the Blue Flag to the quality granted by the Foundation European Environmental Education. The cleanliness and services on these beaches are important.

The beaches located near the town are: La Pedruscada, Son Moll, Cala Ratjada, Cala Gat, L’Olla, Cala Lliteres, Cala Agulla and Cala Moltó.

In addition to the beaches, the marina in which a fishing activity has been developed, the Capdepera lighthouse and the March Palace, owned by the March family, are important.
