History<\/h2>\n

The Via Verde is a cycling and hiking trail about 30km long. It leads from Manacor via Sant Lloren\u00e7, Son Carri\u00f3 and Son Servera to Art\u00e0 and was opened in 2014.<\/p>\n

The Via Verde is the former railroad line between Manacor and Arta. From 1921 until the seventies, train traffic ran here until its closure in 1977, after which the line visibly deteriorated, several plans to reopen failed.<\/p>\n

Then, finally, the transformation into a cycling and hiking trail took place.<\/p>\n

More than 13,000 shrubs and about 4,5000 trees were planted along the route, including mulberry trees, pines and holm oaks, which are under special protection.<\/p>\n

You will find information boards along the Via Verde with interesting information about the flora and fauna and about the places along the route.<\/p>\n

There are also several rest and picnic areas, equipped with tables, benches, trash cans and bike racks.<\/p>\n

The Via Verde today<\/h2>\n

The Via Verde runs along the route actually intended for the railroad, the so-called Levante, in the east of Mallorca from Manacor to Art\u00e0 and offers its visitors changing landscapes.<\/p>\n

The Via Verde is especially popular with hikers, cyclists, joggers and horseback riders.<\/p>\n

Interesting sights along the Via Verde are the early Christian basilica Son Pereat\u00f3 in Manacor, the mountain Puig de Na Penyal near Son Severa, the Talaiotic settlement Ses Paisses near Art\u00e0 and the Mallorca Almond Blossom Routes<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On possible side trips to the worth seeing places Sant Lloren\u00e7, Son Carrio and Son Servera the way leads past restored old station buildings. In the station of Art\u00e0, local handicrafts are offered for sale.<\/p>\n

By the way, you don’t need walking shoes because of the even ground, comfortable flat shoes are enough.<\/p>\n

Please note that dogs are to be kept on a leash and horses are to be ridden only at walking pace.<\/p>\n
