Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca and the seat of the autonomous government of the Balearic Islands. Besides Palma de Mallorca there are interesting places like S’Arenal or Cala Major.

Palma is the supply center of the Balearic Islands, where, in addition to the government, the largest port, the largest airport and most infrastructure facilities are located. In addition, the city is a tourist magnet, as excursions are offered here, especially from the hotels scattered around the island.

At the beginning of October 2008, the addition “de Mallorca” in the name of the city and municipality of Palma was deleted from the Spanish municipal register. This was the implementation of a request dating back to 1998. This was initially reversed by the city government on November 16, 2011. Since January 28, 2016, the name is once again Palma.

In 123 BC, Quintus Caecilius Metellus and his fleet conquered the island of Mallorca, which had been inhabited since 5000 BC (Talayotic culture). As one of his first official acts, the Roman consul founded the city of Palma (then called Palmaria Palmensis). After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 4th century, the decline of the city began, which was stopped only with the conquest by the Arabs in 903. They established an Arab-Islamic culture in Palma and were expelled from the island by the Aragonese in 1229. Subsequently, the Kingdom of Mallorca was founded (1276), but it reverted to the House of Aragon in 1343 after the line of rulers died out. The Aragonese expanded the city, including the construction of La Seu Cathedral and the city fortifications, so that at its height in the 16th century it had about 40,000 inhabitants. Together with Aragon, Mallorca later became part of Spain, to which it still belongs today. A renewed boom began at the beginning of the 20th century, when many buildings were constructed in the Modernisme style. After the Second World War, mass tourism began in Mallorca, which since then has provided the city with a good economic base.

The main sight of the city is the gothic cathedral La Seu in the south of the old town not far from the coast. In addition, there are 31 other churches in the old town, most of them Gothic, such as the Basilica of Sant Francesc and the Church of Santa Eulàlia. Next to the cathedral is the palace, which serves as the residence of the King of Spain during visits to the Balearic Islands.

The old town of Palma represents a stylistic mixture of Spanish-Catalan and Arabic influences. It is known for its numerous narrow streets, some of which are connected only by stairs. Thus, the old town is mostly car-free, except for some thoroughfares. Its center is the Plaça Major. At the Plaça de Cort near the town hall, there is a specially protected olive tree that is several hundred years old.

Southwest and outside the old town above the harbor rises the Castell de Bellver, a medieval castle complex.

Llotja de Palma is not far from the port and the cathedral. It is another masterpiece of Palma’s civic Gothic architecture and was the former seat of the Sea Trade Exchange. It was built by architect Guillem Sagrera from Felanitx, who was also involved in the construction of the Gothic cathedral La Seu.

In Palma’s suburb Cala Major worked and died the Catalan painter Joan Miró. In the house of his studio, where in addition to the studio also selected works can be visited, is now the headquarters of the Foundation Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca. In Palma there is also a museum of contemporary art, the Es Baluard.

The municipality of Palma has a total of 15 controlled and supervised bathing beaches, designated Balneario No 1 to 15. The beaches are located east of the city center in the district of Platja de Palma, in the area of the village of S’Arenal. In the neighborhood there are many hotel complexes, restaurants, bars and discos. Especially in Germany is known as Ballermann 6 Balneario No 6.

Campanet

Campanet is one of the most beautiful places on Mallorca. The place is a municipality on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca. It is located in the north of the island.

The municipality is located on the main road MA-13, from Inca towards Alcúdia. Campanet covers an area of 34.62 km² and borders the municipalities of Pollença, sa Pobla, Búger, Selva and Escorca. The north of the area is mountainous, while in the center there is a hilly landscape formed by the alluvial valleys of the Comafrea and Caselles torrents -which, after their union, form the Sant Miquel torrent. An alluvial plain spreads in the south of the municipality. The mountains in the northern part do not reach a height that is particularly noteworthy, but here there are many wells (fountains), which is perhaps the most characteristic of the municipality. Through filtration in the rainy season, noteworthy springs are formed in the mountains, such as the “fonts Ufanes de Gabellí”.

Die Vermutung, dass der Ortsname seinen Ursprung in „campana“ oder „campaneta“ (Glocke, Glöckchen) hat,

suggests itself, but is wrong. Rather, Campanet is a compound of the late Latin capanna with the Arabic plural kapanät, which means grouping of shepherd huts and indicates that this area was continuously inhabited since prehistoric times.

At the time of the Moorish rule, this settlement, together with the settlement of Ullaró, belonged to the district of Inca and formed the nucleus around which the town grew in the Middle Ages. According to the book on the division of territory by James I, after the Catalan conquest Campanet had an area of 18 juchart, or 288 quarterades (a quarterada – 71.03 ares), and together with Búger, the current estate of Ullaró and Sa Pobla, formed a single municipality that was assigned as a royal share to the noblemen from Barcelona. The original church, located near the caves, was built on the crest of the Tel, probably over an even older structure.

This place in Mallorca has a present-day chapel that is very well known. The chapel of Sant Miquel has been a parish church since the year 1248, as evidenced by a record of Pope Innocent IV. In 1315 the ecclesiastical sponsorship passed to Sa Pobla, and from 1368 until 1425 it passed again to Sant Miquel, when it was transferred to a new church built in the center of the village. These ecclesiastical vicissitudes went hand in hand with the political ones. Due to the zealous policy of founding towns by King Jaume II, Campanet was annexed to Sa Pobla in 1300.

After several disputes and requests from the aldermen of Campanet, in 1368, with the approval of Pere the Ceremonious, Campanet became independent as a municipality and parish, together with the districts of Búger and Ullaró. The last change happened in 1823, when Búger also became an independent municipality. The present parish church was built in devotion to the Immaculate Conception over an even older one. Construction began in 1717, during the time of the parish priest Miquel Martí Tamorer (his tomb is in the center of the church, under the presbytery); in 1774, after some interruptions, the church was completed.

The municipality of Selva is located 32 km from Palma. This charming village is located in the district of Es Raiguer and borders Inca. The municipality has about 3,500 inhabitants and consists of five villages: Selva, Caimari, Moscari, Binibona and Biniamar. This municipality is located on the slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana and is an area of contrasts between the plains and the mountains. On one side there are calcareous mountains, heavy and bulky, and forests, on the other side there is a flat area divided into numerous small owners of farms with dry and irrigated lands. The almond trees, the olive trees, the cereals, the carob trees and the fig trees rise above all the other crops.

The Gothic church of Selva is particularly worth seeing. It is from the 13th century and is dedicated to the patron saint of the town (San Lorenzo). According to popular belief, the highest part of the church is at the same level as the main square of the monastery of Lluc.

Caimari: Caimari is the second largest town in the municipality and is located on the slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana. Some of the important events that take place there are: The “Olive Market” in November and the International Festival of Classical Music, which also takes place in November.

The fine sandy beach on the west side is completely framed by a pine forest that has spread over an area of dunes. Petra has 2500 inhabitants and borders the municipalities of Villafranca de Bonany, Sant Joan, Sineu, Ariany, Santa Margalida, Artà, Sant Llorenç de Cardessar and Manacor.

In the 13th century, the municipality became the property of King James I, who divided the territory among his knights. The municipality at that time had a large area that included the current municipalities of Petra, Vilafranca, Sineu, Sant Joan and Lloret. It was the region of Mallorca with the largest population.

Zwischen dem 16. und 17. Jahrhundert war Petra eine

rich municipality thanks to its large area, large population and important agriculture and livestock. During these two centuries, two of the most important buildings of the village were built: the parish church and the convent of Sant Bernardí. In the 19th century, the harvests, wealth and population declined due to many epidemics and droughts.

The village of Petra is known worldwide for its connection with Fra Juníper Serra, who was born in this area on November 24, 1713. At the beginning of the Spanish conquest of Upper California, he was a Franciscan in charge of the missions in Upper and Lower California. He was in charge of ten missions that in time became major cities in the United States, such as San Francisco, San Diego, San Antonio de Padua, Santa Clara, etc. His figure symbolizes the State of California in the Capitol in Washington.

Petra is literally the municipality of the vineyards. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the municipality also had an important agricultural and livestock economy, as evidenced by the number of large estates such as Son Mieres, Son Santandreu, Los Cabanells Vells and Ses Cabanasses. Furthermore, people involved in the production and conservation of the traditional cultivation methods are another proof of this tradition.

In the village you can find the Monastery of Bonany (17th and 18th century), also known as the Hermitage of Bonany. The word “Bonany” means “good year”. In 1609, the drought forced the inhabitants to go up the mountain in procession, thus asking for rain. The desired rain came and there was a good harvest.

In Petra, at number 6 Fra Juníper Street, there is the Fra Juníper Serra Museum dedicated to him. It is located next to the house where he was born, which you can also visit. The house is a good example of how humble people lived in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The 11 km long, gently sloping sandy beach is ideal for families with small children and only about 15 m from the loft. The Natural Park of S’Albufera consists of 1708 hectares of wetlands and dunes. It is a place of exceptional beauty, which has an important ornithological value. S’Albufera is a real treasure that can be found next to the hotels in Platja de Muro.

Muro

The important municipality of Muro is located in the north of Mallorca and consists of two nuclei of settlements: Muro and Platja de Muro and Can Picafort. Muro borders Santa Margalida to the southeast, Maria de la Salut to the south, Llubí to the southwest, Sa Pobla to the west, Alcúdia to the north and the sea to the northeast. The municipality has an area of 55.4 km² and 5872 inhabitants.

The small hill on which the village of Muro is located has been inhabited since prehistoric times. This hill made the village a good surveillance point over the sea already in Roman times.

In this district 51 archaeological excavations have been documented. Many caves have been preserved from the Pre-Talaiotic culture, which were used as residences in the past. There are also many solitary talaiots. From the Roman period, among others, coins and tombs have been discovered.

In this municipality is the area of S’Albufera de Muro, which nowadays is a natural park. A large part of the beach has been preserved in its natural state, as it has important natural areas:

S’Albufera Natural Park and Sa Comuna de Muro Natural Reserve, both biological reserves.

The Natural Park of S’Albufera consists of 1708 hectares of wetlands and dunes. It is a place of exceptional beauty that has an important ornithological value. S’Albufera is a real treasure that can be found right next to the hotels in Platja de Muro.

In the past, S’Albufera was an ancient lake that was formed about 18 million years ago. It is separated from the sea by a series of dunes that have been filled by sediments over the centuries. The water is the basis of the biological richness and the reason why most of the park remains flooded. This allows a continuous growth of vegetation.

The different plant species protect and feed a large number of animals, which at the same time are the food of other animal species. Thanks to the abundance of water, the diversity of living organisms is very high. S’Albufera is the ecosystem with the highest biodiversity in the Balearic Islands.

The Platja de Muro area extends for 5.5 km along the coast of the municipality of Muro. It is located in the bay of Alcúdia, in the north of Mallorca and consists of the towns of Can Picafort, Port d’Alcúdia and Albufera Gran. The beach consists of dunes populated by low vegetation and pine trees.

Muro is perfect to practice windsurfing or hiking surrounded by nature.

It is possible to rent sunbeds, umbrellas and pedal boats and there are beach bars and showers just a few meters from the sea.

Binissalem

The Mallorcan village of Binissalem is the most famous wine village in Mallorca. But you don’t have to be a wine lover to go to Binissalem.

Every year, after the grape harvest, the famous wine festival is celebrated. For almost two weeks in the second half of September, there is an event almost every day, popular – even among visitors – the great grape battle and the grape betting. The market on Friday offers a nice change. Interesting destinations near Binissalem are the town of Inca with its picturesque baroque church of Santa Maria la Major d’Inca and the municipality of Santa Maria del Camí, where a monastery houses the Museo Balear.

Alcudia

The town of Alcúdia is located 54 km from Palma, in the peninsula that separates the two large bays of Alcúdia and Pollença. This town was a Roman colony and you can still find interesting relics from the Roman city of Pollentia. Alcúdia is a paradisiacal place and was already recognized by the different popular cultures in prehistoric times.

The Museum of Pollentia in Alcúdia has an exhibition of the archaeological findings discovered in this enclave. The ruins of an amphitheater can still be found there. The historic town of Alcúdia is the center of the municipality. It has expanded outward, as this charming and beautiful walled town became too small to receive the demographic growth and subsequent popular migrations that took place there due to the tourist boom in the seventies and eighties.

The main part of the old town consists of pedestrian streets. Here you will find the typical Mallorcan vacation homes, art galleries, stores, restaurants and winding corners with great charm. Alcúdia constitutes a fantastic setting for lovers of nature and the place is located in a quiet location in Mallorca. The municipality has 30 km of coastline with different landscapes, from beautiful fine sand beaches to rugged cliffs and charming little coves of great beauty. If you want to practice hiking sports, we recommend you to discover the mountain routes of La Victòria. The paths are well signposted and indicate the duration of each route.

If you start from Alcúdia, you can choose different alternatives according to the difficulty and duration you want to invest. Along the route there are panels with information about the surroundings. In autumn and winter, free guided excursions are organized by the municipality as part of the program Hivern a Mallorca (Winter in Mallorca). These excursions last between three and four hours. Find out more and book at the municipal tourist office. The beach of Alcúdia is the zone that has developed the most and from the looks of it it will continue to do so. If you want to relax on a deck chair with a book, Alcúdia beach is ideal for you. Only four decades back this area was practically uninhabited. There was only the beach, an area of dunes and farmland. With the development of tourism, a strong hotel industry has been established, which nowadays can accommodate more than 30,000 guests.

Of interest Alcúdia has been designated Ecotourist Municipality due to their efforts for environmental protection. Hotels in Alcúdia that have the eco-label: Aparthotel Ivory Playa, Hotel Astoria Playa, Hotel Bahía de Alcúdia, Club Pollentia, Aparthotel Alcudia Garden, Aparthotel Palm Garden, Aparthotel Viva Sunrise, Aparthotel Viva Tropic, Vanity Hotel Golf, Aparthotel Edén Alcúdia, Aparthotel Edén Lago, Sunwing Nuevas Palmeras, Sunwing Victoria, Hotel Boccaccio, Aparthotel Sol Alcúdia Center, Sunwing Las Pirámides, Sunwing Las Palmeras.
